SETUPS

A professional setup ensures your instrument plays and sounds its best. Whether your instrument is brand-new, a few years old, vintage, or somewhere in-between, if it doesn’t feel right when you’re playing it, a setup will undoubtedly help it sound and play at its best. A set up for all types of guitars is $100 ($50 additional for Floyd Rose); $70 for ukuleles and banjos; $90 for basses if strings are not changed. Contact us to schedule a setup.

A setup at Urban Canyon Guitar Repair includes: Full inspection and tune up of your instrument from top to bottom to ensure it’s structurally sound & playing at the right specs. All adjustments (truss rod relief, string & nut action, pickups) are measured to .001 of an inch; full cleaning, fret polishing, fret board oiling, strobe intonation and a final polish complete the service. A string change (purchase strings from us or supply your own) is also included; for bass guitars, the same strings can be used. If additional repairs are needed, we’ll let you know with a cost estimate and you can decide whether to proceed.

Signs of an instrument needing a setup: Fret buzz, barre chords and/or higher frets difficult to play, fret sprout (sharp ends), or you feel like you’re expending a lot of effort to play. Also, if you’ve bought a used instrument and put on new strings, a setup will adjust the instrument specs for these new strings, not to mention clear out any dirt and gunk (mold on the frets and flakes of skin everywhere are common) left by the previous owner.

After the setup: Your instrument will be very clean and feel amazing: Smoother frets and fret board, no buzzing, enhanced tone and sustain, and perfect action.

We recommend getting a setup every 6 to 12 months. A new instrument may also need a setup, but let it settle for couple of weeks before bringing it in. If you’ve bought a used instrument, it’s probably a good idea to get it set up, too, especially if you’re changing the string gauge. Also, wood instruments continue to settle over time; the best scenario is to play it often and keep it in a fairly stable environment with a relative humidity somewhere between 40-50%. We sell humidification kits, by the way!

STRING CHANGES

String changes: Acoustic, electric & bass guitars, banjos, ukuleles: $25 + cost of strings or bring your own. Classical & 12-string guitars: $30 + strings.

Includes polishing and oiling of your instrument. A variety of D’Addario strings are available for purchase. Contact us to schedule a string change.

How often should you change your strings? The answer is that there is no single rule. We advise you to change them when they sound blah, or your fingers start slipping on them, or they look dirty. It’s up to you: Some players change them everyday. Other people never change their strings. And everyone else changes them somewhere between those two extremes!
